Practical tips for public speaking – public speaking is a special skill which not everyone possesses but we have compiled some practical tips to help you if you struggle with public speaking

Read the full content below:

  • Tell a story: People relate more to a story when you are trying to pass a point across than when you are just talking about it. Storytelling is a powerful way of capturing the attention of your audience and making them relate to what you are saying. Tell them about your own experience in the form of a story.
  • Don’t cram: Let us say you have a presentation to present to an audience, you should not make the mistake of cramming the presentation, rather understand your topic and have it at your fingertips. That way, you have a less chance of forgetting and stuttering your way through.
  • Be open and free: Try to be really open and feel free when speaking to your audience. No need to be uptight and closed up. Allow your body language to show that you are free with them, smile and open up; that way your audience flows really well with you.
  • Don’t stop when you make mistakes: We are all humans and mistakes are inevitable sometimes. When you miss a couple of words or forget some things that you are supposed to talk about or mix things up, don’t make it obvious that there was mistake. Rather keep talking and correct yourself with style or class. Don’t make room for awkward silence.
  • Prepare for questions: At the end of your speech, it is likely that your audience will have one question or the other to ask you about your presentation or speech. This is why it is important to be prepared at all times and make a list of any possible questions that could come out of your speech.
  • Exude confidence: When you are shy or show lack of confidence, people will be quick to notice and they may not even want to pay attention to what you have to say because even you have no confidence in yourself. It is important to show that you know what you are saying and you portray yourself as confident.
  • Practice: Never, I repeat, never come up to the stage unprepared. You might have heard stories of those that came up unprepared but totally crushed itr but then you have to understand that this is an exception and not the rule. When you have not been practicing, it will show.
  • Appear visually appealing: Dress for the occasion and do not stand out in a negative way like a sore thumb unless your dressing is to pass a message across too. Ta and it should correspond with your message.Take time to choose your outfit for the speech
  • Know your audience: This is a vital part of achieving success in public speaking. Make a research about the kind of audience you would be speaking to. Know things such as their age range, general occupation, beliefs and preferences. Knowing about their culture is also important so you flow better with them.
  • You can crack a joke: Your speech does not have to be as serious as a graveyard. Crack a joke once in a while to keep your audience in a relaxed mood, this way your message flows better and your audience will want you back.
