How to deal with stress

Are you looking to know How to deal with stress in our everyday life and activities? Then deep dive into this topic is definitely going to help.

Do you know that Millennials (ages 18-33) and Gen Xers(ages 34-47) report the highest average stress levels?
We usually think of stressors as being negative such as an exhausting work, a nagging boss, a nagging spouse, etc. But anything that puts high demands on you can be considered stressful; this can be positive things such as getting married, acquiring a home, going to college, etc.

Stress is becoming a “normal” experience but stress can make you fall ill, weaken your immune system, make you unproductive, short-tempered and sour. The down side of stress is not worth it so why not take a deep breath, eat an ice cream.

Here are 15 sure fire ways to deal with stress:

TAKE AN ICE CREAM:

Take a walk or a drive to the nearest ice cream shop. Make out time to go through all the ice cream flavors and then make a pick. You could choose your favorite one or decide to try out a foreign flavor. Then go to a seat preferably near the window so you can see how the birds chirp and fly with no care in the world. And then ask yourself: ” If I die because I’m stressed out, won’t the world still go round? Won’t my boss replace me with someone else? Or won’t my kids go on with their life? Won’t my spouse remarry?” Muse on all these and please understand that with or without you, life still goes on and so save yourself the stress because at the end of day, the consequences far outweighs any “benefits” you may think it has. After you have done all these, order another ice cream.

CREATIVE COOKING OR WHAT HAVE YOU THAT IS ALSO CREATIVE:

If you are one that enjoys cooking, this can be a very therapeutic way of brushing off stress. Try new recipes, try that baking you keep putting off and don’t worry about the food coming out all nice. You may not see cooking as your thing but drawing may be the one thing that takes that stress off your back so relax and do it. It may not be drawing for another person but there are many other creative things that you could do and raise your positive vibes. Do it and don’t look at the clock.

TAKE A WALK:

The reason taking a walk is so often suggested is because it has a calming effect and allows you to take in your environment, notice things that have been there before which you probably hadn’t noticed since and also give you time for reflection. It is very refreshing, especially when it is a walk around nature. You get to realize that you are a part of the world too, just like the flowers, rivers, etc. You get to appreciate your life even more and realize that life is a gift from God and so should be taken care of.

SLEEP:

Sleeping is in its own way very therapeutic and relaxing. Taking out time to have a very long sleep is very vital as sleep helps us have a better attention span, refreshes our memory and leaves us more clear headed. If you have tight week days you can use the weekends to have very long hours of sleep and if falling asleep is a Herculean task for you, you can take sleeping pills to help you. (Note: DO NOT TAKE AN OVERDOSE OR YOU COULD SLEEP AND WAKE UP ON THE OTHER SIDE. This is a funny sounding precaution but a serious one too)

TAKE A LONG HOT BATH:

Taking a long hot bath can help calm your nerves. You may not want to do this in the morning when you are preparing to beat the time and not be late for work or school or wherever you rush off to in the morning. Take time out whenever you are very free and have plenty of time for yourself. Using soap to scrub out the stress might not work out; rather just allow the hot water to wash down your body, and drain your stress away. Don’t forget to keep an open mind; anything could happen including getting drowned:)

WRITE IT DOWN:

You can keep a “stress diary” where you scribble away what you are stressed about. Don’t think about it too much, just allow ink flow on pages (as it is supposed to). Write on what or who you may be angry or unhappy about: yourself, your clothes, your spouse, your boss. Allow a day or two to pass after which you look into your diary and really see which is worth the stress. You may discover a change in perspective or that what you are stressed about is not really worth it.

CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE:

A change in perspective may be all You need to reduce your stress level. Try to change your perspective and look through the lengths of the other person. Put yourself in the shoes of let’s say your child or your husband and try to imagine what goes on in their minds. Take out time to study their behaviors and their patterns of thoughts so that you can better understand them.

TALK TO THEM (STRESSORS):

you can talk to the person if the source of the stress is a human being. For example your child, your boss, your spouse etc. Take out time and engage them in conversations. Tell them very politely( especially your boss. I’m sure you don’t want to be fired due to impoliteness)about their behaviors that put pressure on you and eventually become stressors. Let them know the devastating effects they have on your health, on your emotions, etc. Do not be judgmental. Try as much as possible not to lay blame. Just lay out your feelings and your truth in a polite way. It is then left for them to make a change.

DECLUTTER:

Removing some things that are very unnecessary and contribute to your stress can really reduce your stress in a big way. Perhaps as a mum you could assign some work to your children that are up to the job, as a boss you could assign some work to your workers or even employ more workers; you could also find an assistant to help you. Try as much as possible to assign some of the big workloads to others whether as a mum, a boss, a father, etc. As a student, allocate time to what is really important and place priorities, cut off things or work that are not really important, cut down on workload and focus on your majors. It will greatly help in freeing your time and giving you more space for yourself.

LISTEN TO RELAXING MUSIC:

playing calm music has a positive effect on the brain and body. It can lower blood pressure and reduce cortisol hormone linked to stress… you could try listening to ocean or nature sounds which have a relaxing effect on you.

TALK TO YOURSELF:

Even though this may seem crazy, (although you may prefer to do it when you are alone and not when you are out with someone) talking things out with yourself calmly can be very relieving because you get to remind yourself that you are important too and need rest and you get to answer yourself questions like: is this worth it? Is it going to be worth it next week, month or year? What can I do to reduce the stress on myself?

TALK IT OUT WITH A FRIEND:

Take a break to call a friend if you wish and talk about your problems or stresses. Good relationships with friends and loved ones are important to any healthy lifestyle. A reassuring voice once in a while and a different perspective can greatly reduce stress.

TALK TO GOD:

There is this relief in feeling talking to God about our troubles. He is a supernatural being, all-powerful and not to forget he very genuinely cares about even the littlest details in our lives and is only waiting for us to whisper in his ears for him to come running to us and helping us through it all as he promised.

POSITIVE WORDS/THINKING:

Mentally visualize and affirm and reaffirm positivity. Keep your thoughts on them and emphasize them to the fullest extent. Visualize peace and reaffirm them as you go about your day. Drive out negative emotions and thoughts by thinking positive ones. Fill your mind with thoughts of faith, confidence and security.

EAT AN ICE CREAM AGAIN:

The importance of eating an ice cream when you are stressed out cannot be overemphasized. So whenever you feel even the slightest strain of a stressful day on you stop at the nearby ice cream shop, choose your favorite flavor and lick away happily because with or without you the world goes around.
